Rooted in Reading

We have introducing Rooted in Reading materials which we will be using over the rest of the session with all the children to encourage reading for pleasure of a wide range of texts. These materials were developed in Lincolnshire and were very successful in raising the profile of reading within school communities. Our local libraries of St Andrews, Cupar, Newport on Tay and Tayport have kindly volunteered to support us in our endeavour to encourage all Wormit School children to read for enjoyment and choice. All pupils will receive a Rooted in Reading Passport suited to their age and stage.

Nursery and P1: Sharing Stories and Rhymes Passport

P2 and P3: Reading together Passport

P4 and P5: Blue Reading Passport

P6 and P7: Green Reading Passport

The passport forms a record of the different texts read or shared. The texts can be read in any order. When children have read or shared a text their passport should be stamped in school or at the local libraries mentioned above. We hope this initiative will also provide parents with the opportunity to share and discuss the texts children choose to read. We want to work together to ensure that all children develop the reading habit and to celebrate their accomplishment in completing the reading passports.

In all classes the children are making recommendations to each other and talking about their choices of books. We would ask that parents talk about their children's choices of books and work with them to identify books and reading materials they may tackle.
