The Blairhall Primary School Parent Council re-established itself in October 2011 following a number of years of inactivity. Our group has grown in its professionalism and proactivity over the past four years and consistently works hard to support the School in its endeavours.
Two years ago the Blairhall Primary School pupils designed the Parent Council logo and with the creation of our constitution, supported our growth towards establishing ourselves as a productive and recognised committee within the school community.
Initially our fundraising activities had marginal success however over the past two years we have worked hard to coordinate a concise and effective yearly fundraising program. We include the pupils in our fundraising activities and every year organise a sponsored event with a focus on exercise and health. In May 2014 we held a sponsored wheelathon and raised £1100 and in April 2015 raised £660 following a sponsored danceathon. We have also held Ceilidhs, car boot sales, successfully organised a Halloween party and every year the children design Christmas cards through the Art Project for their families to purchase.
In 2014 through our fundraising efforts we raised £1800 and on behalf of the School purchased a big television and moveable stand which is used to entertain the children on bad weather days. We also provide all primary one children with homework and gym bags, have purchased two spelling resources to improve and challenge the children’s language skills, and three hand-held cameras to support project work.
Earlier this year our main focus was the regeneration of the School playground with the help of the Grounds for Learning initiative. The Parent Council purchased willow so a willow arch could be constructed in the wild flower meadow, and supported a Ground Force Day in February to revamp flower beds and create planters for the pergola plants. The playground regeneration will be an ongoing project over the next couple of years to enable the School to make good use of the outside space and educate the pupils on caring for their environment.
In the latter part of this year we are focusing on fundraising to purchase suitable sound equipment so we can support the pupils’ creative talents, and give parents/guardians the opportunity to fully engage and enjoy their child’s performance.
The Parent Council is open to all parents and guardians who have children at the Primary School, and although the committee meetings are attended by a select few, we are supported when running events. We keep the wider community updated regarding projects and events via our facebook page, the School website page and newsletters/flyers.
Here's what we've done so far this year -
1. The purchase of new football strips.
2. A planter was constructed and planted with flowers within the school grounds.
3. During sports day we raised around £120 from a tombola stand.
4. Secured an £1000 grant from a local business to help promote outdoor learning.
And many more. Please see the attached letter in the publications section below.
