This term is a long term and we are therefore going to cover lots of interesting topics.


We began this term with a Scottish topic, focussing on Robert Burns and his poems. We explored the life of Robert Burns and took part in the school wide poetry competition reciting some of Robert Burn’s most famous work. The children had a choice between “To a Mouse” and “Tam O’Shanter”. The two poetry winners shared their poems at our Burns assembly and the whole class sang “500 miles” by the Proclaimers as our Scottish song.


We also explored some Scottish art work, such as creating our own Celtic Knots and looking at some of the art work of Charles Rene Mackintosh, a famous Scottish artist.


During this Scottish topic we have also explored some Scot’s language, creating our own Scots Language Dictionaries and translating our favourite childhood books into Scots. We will be sharing our books with the younger classes. The children did a really good job with this and it is clear they have put a lot of effort into their Scots children’s books.


Our topic this term was chosen by the pupils and we have decided to explore Japan, making comparisons with Scottish society as well as finding out about Japanese culture, religion, schools, art work and history.


Our class novel is “The Explorer”, which is about four children becoming lost in the Amazon Rainforest and having to look after themselves, explore and find a way home. We will be using this novel to inspire our creative writing and imagination.


We are continuing with our work on the John Muir Award in connection with our Outdoor Learning. We are trying to encourage wildlife to use our school grounds so we have conducted a survey highlighting what we have, what we do not have and what needs to be improved. From the results, we are hoping to improve the plants for habitat as well as make bug hotels and bird feeders. We will be looking at the kinds of wildlife that are attracted to our school grounds over this term and the next, to discuss how the weather and seasons impact upon this.


In numeracy this term, our focus is on fractions, decimals and percentages. We will be focussing initially on developing our understanding of fractions as parts of whole numbers, and then moving on to look at decimals and percentages. In literacy, we will be focussing on developing our comprehension skills and enhancing our creative writing using the features of successful creative writing. In health and wellbeing we are looking at food and global footprints, as well as healthy eating, exercise and general wellbeing.


This is a very busy term indeed and we have lots of exciting work to get through.
