Work Equipment (PUWER)
Work equipment is any machinery, appliance, apparatus, tool or installation for use at work (whether exclusively or not). This includes equipment which employees provide for their own use at work.
The scope of ‘work equipment’ is extremely wide. The definition extends to: ladders, scaffold, mobile and ride-on plant, lifting equipment and accessories, fixed and portable machines, hand tools, power tools, gas cutting and welding equipment, electrical appliances, etc. Part 3.B of the Council’s Health and Safety Management Framework lists additional items of work equipment typically used in Fife Council Workplaces.
The Corporate Document Provision, Safe Use and Maintenance of Work Equipment (OHS-C-24.G1) provides a general guide to selection, use and maintenance of work equipment and will support senior managers and others in complying with Parts 2 and 3 of the Council’s Health and Safety Management Framework.
