Everyone is unwell now and again.  Some employees will be unable to attend work regularly or may have longer absences because of serious illness.  It is important that every absence from work is managed.  The council has clear expectations that the following principles will be applied in the management of attendance:

  • Absence must be managed:
  • Contact must be maintained
  • Return to work meetings must be held after every absence
  • Formal action to be taken where applicable

If you identify there is a problem with attendance:

  • Initiate formal action
  • Ensure the employee is aware of the possible consequences

Long term absences:

  • Stay on top of long term cases
  • Maintain regular contact
  • Make a referral to occupational health
  • Hold regular reviews with the employee
